The Hussars were a type of light cavalry that was historically used in many European armies, including the German army. They were known for their distinctive uniforms and their role as scouts and raiders.
The name derives from the Hungarian title of the same name, referring to a group of light cavalry soldiers called "Huszár", who were used by the occupying Habsburgs as armed guards for royalty in the 15th century. "Hussar" became generic terms for light cavalry formations in 19th century Europe.
The Hussars were a class of light cavalry that were popular in Europe during the 17th to 19th centuries. Fiercely loyal to their leaders, they were known for their bravery and feared by the enemy. As skilled experts in the use of sabre, lance and scimitar, they became an icon of speed, agility and flair among military units.
Hussars were the last branch of cavalry to fully adopt the new revolutionized tactics of the Napoleonic era, mostly due to their tradition for fighting in line and not charging with drawn swords until contact was made. In fact, many hussars were fanatically loyal towards their emperor and followed him until death on a battle field.
Hussar regiments still exist today but as a traditional branch of the army; most current day European armies use them for ceremonial purposes only.
